Romeo
Romeo is a Statutory Town in Conejos County, Colorado, United States. The population was 302 at the 2020 census. A post office called Romeo was established in 1901. The community derives its name from the surname Romero.
History
The history of Romeo, Colorado includes its original name, a petition for a post office, and a name change: Original name: The community was originally named "Sunflower" by Mormon settlers in 1874 because of the abundance of sunflowers in the area. Petition for a post office: A man named Romero petitioned for a post office for the community, but the name Romero was already in use in Colorado. Name change: To avoid confusion, Romero removed the second "r" from his name, and the community and post office were named Romeo. Establishment: The community was established in 1889. Post office: A post office called Romeo was established in 1901. Population: In 2020, the population of Romeo was 302.
Geography
Romeo is in east-central Conejos County in the San Luis Valley region. U.S. Route 285 runs along the western border of the town, leading north 21 miles to Alamosa and south 12 miles to the New Mexico border and beyond. Colorado State Highway 142 is the town's Main Street, with its western terminus at U.S. 285 and leading east 3 miles to Manassa and 32 miles to San Luis. Romeo is located at 37° 10′ 19″ N, 105° 59′ 7″ W According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.2 square miles, all of it land.
