History

This history describes the establishment of the Raymond Resort in 1904 by Charles H. Raymond, his wife Jane A. Stanley, and their son, Alvin C. Raymond. They homesteaded the 160 acre Raymond site. The Raymond homestead was patented in 1907 when the homestead was bought by a trio of Longmont partners after Charles Raymond succumbed to Consumption or pulmonary tuberculosis. The three partners who purchased the Raymond property wanted it as a site for weekend and summer vacation cabins for their families. The Longmont partners eventually sold the homestead in late 1921 to an entrepreneurial Longmont carpenter named Ace W. Woolley. Woolley platted the 160 acre property in partnership with a Longmont realtor then set out to sell cabin lots and build vacation cabins for families from Longmont and other nearby towns and cities. While the development of Raymond in the early 1900s was the start-up of the resort at Peaceful Valley around 1910 by John T. Roberts and his wife, Mildred. In addition, Jones and Maggie Townley purchased the 160 acre site they called Heathermeade in 1916. Like the Raymond-Woolley development, the Peaceful Valley and Heathermeade goals were the sale of cabin lots in the upper Middle St. Vrain Valley and development of these mountain communities. Boulder County took over the Lyons-to-Heathermeade road in 1916. The Heathermeade discussion describes improving the road from Lyons to Heathermeade in 1916 because Jones Townley was a County Commissioner who was heavily involved in road construction. A discussion of the growth of Raymond centers on Charles Albert Gunning and Clara Mary Bennewitz who built their Raymond cabin in 1917. The Gunning’s photograph albums survived and help paint a charming picture of life in a mountain vacation cabin in the period 1917-2019.

While Raymond is a quirky place along the road, the Raymond Cabins look like a nice place to get away from everything for a nice weekend.
