History

Phippsburg, named after Colorado's United States Senator Lawrence Phipps, became the hub of activity for miners when Denver's Sam Perry constructed a boarding house and box car houses for railroad and mining employees. A 24-hour gambling house was a local community attraction. Phippsburg grew as a coal company town outside of Oak Creek. In the early 1900’s Denver & Salt Lake Railroad was built through the rocky mountains and reached the Yampa Valley. At the turn of the 19th century, the community was a major hub for the Denver Northwestern & Pacific Railway and David Moffat’s Denver & Salt Lake Railroad. In 1912 it was sold to the railroad and became an important railroad yard. It now serves the Union Pacific Railroad.Employees of Union Pacific still work out of the old Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad rail yard.
