History

Masonville, has an interesting history that dates back to the late 19th century. The town was named after James Robinson Mason, an early pioneer who settled along Buckhorn Creek. He was a cattle rancher and an active community member. In the 1890s, a small gold rush in Buckhorn Canyon led to the establishment of Masonville. James Mason platted the town in anticipation of a population boom that never quite materialized. Despite this, the town did see some development, including the construction of the Masonville Mercantile, a hotel, and a general store. The town’s name was changed from Mason City to Masonville in 1896 to avoid confusion with another Mason City in Colorado. Today, Masonville remains a small, charming community with a rich history tied to the early days of Colorado’s settlement and gold rush era.

Comment

This tiny community has a personality of its own, it is an eclectic mix of nicer new homes and old less than perfectly maintained places, but they are not surrounded by old junk you see in many small communities. The heart of town has an "anchor store" know as the Masonville Merecantile - worth a stop.
