History
The community was named after the lucerne that grew near the original town site. Lucerne is an unincorporated community located in Weld County. The community has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century. The Lucerne Post Office has been in operation since 1892. One notable historical site in Lucerne is the Milne Farm. James Milne purchased 160 acres of land in 1888 from ex-senator Captain David Boyd, a prominent pioneer in the nearby city of Greeley. The farm initially grew sugar beets and potatoes, and a fine brick Victorian home built in 1892 still stands today. Lucerne’s history is closely tied to agriculture and irrigation, with early settlers playing significant roles in developing the region’s farming infrastructure3. Lucerne Colorado should not be confused with Lucerne Switzerland (it has aged much more gracefully) Prior to traveling to Lucerne, I was unaware that Lucerne was also a crop and that the town was named for the crop, not its Swiss counterpart. Lucerne, also known as alfalfa, is a perennial legume that can be used as a forage crop and for soil fertility. It's a leafy plant with a deep taproot that can tolerate drought and low temperatures, and grow in areas with as little as 12 inches of annual rainfall
