History
Crestone, Colorado, was officially founded in 1880 amid a regional mining boom that swept through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and San Luis Valley. The town initially grew as prospectors sought gold and silver, fostering a lively community with mining camps, shops, saloons, and a post office. After additional mineral discoveries and Eastern investment, Crestone saw its peak era in the early 1900s, connected by railroad and sustaining a population of up to 800 residents (with 2,000 in the surrounding district). However, like many mining towns, when ore yields diminished and the mining boom faded, Crestone’s population declined drastically. By the mid-20th century, just a handful of residents—largely ranchers and retirees—remained. The 1970s brought a new chapter with the subdivision of the Baca Grant and the development of spiritual centers, transforming Crestone into a destination for spiritual seekers, eco-tourists, and those interested in alternative lifestyles. Today, its major industries include supporting spiritual communities, tourism, educational services, and a small agricultural presence, maintaining its reputation as both a resilient outpost and a modern sanctuary.

Comment
Crestone has a vibe, somewhat strange, somewhat charming, and somewhat reminisent of dueling banjos.
