Cowdry

The town is fairly close to the Wyoming border and fairly close to the sky — it sits at 8,000 feet of altitude. Just west of town is Independence Mountain, a 12,000-foot behemoth with trails that lead to views for miles and miles.

Head east to North Sand Hills Recreation Management Area, where sand dunes reign supreme amongst cottonwood groves.Located north of Walden near the Wyoming border. The unincorporated community in Jackson County has its own post office with a zip code of 80434. Cowdrey Reservoir resides less than two miles south of town.

History

The town was named after Charles Cowdrey and his wife, Julia, who was killed by a board blown off their roof. Cowdrey, Colorado, is a small, unincorporated community located in Jackson County The town has a rich history tied to cattle and supply trade, situated near the confluence of the North Platte, Michigan, and Canadian rivers. One notable landmark in Cowdrey is the Cowdrey General Store, a two-story stucco building with vigas (wooden beams) There's also a unique house made of three interconnected geodesic domes covered in pink stucco, located just west of the town Cowdrey Reservoir, created after the construction of the Cowdrey Dam in 1952, is another significant feature of the area The dam, approximately 700 feet long, blocks the Michigan River and is privately owned by the North Park Angus Ranch.

Having traveled thru here on the way to somewhere else many times I was not aware there were any sand dunes anywhere near here, it may be a place worth stopping by just to see. Don't count on any services while in Cowdry! It is important to note that as of the most recent census, there were 19% more men than women in Cowdry. (25 men, 21 women)
